Should I exchange money, and if so, when?

Nearly every establishment we visit (hotel, shops, restaurants, etc.) accept the US Dollar. However, your change will be given in Lempira.

You do not need to exchange money ahead of time; you can do this at the hotel after check-in. You will avoid any exchange fees this way, too.

What is the exchange rate?

–On August 17,2017–

1 USD =23.3579 HNL; however, this can fluctuate with changes in the economy.

What food(s) am I to avoid?

Do not drink any water unless it is bottled or has been certified as “purified”. Same goes for the ice. When in doubt, stick with bottled water, soda, or juice (without ice).

Do not buy or eat any fresh produce from local vendors. The water supply is not as clean as we are used to and will very likely cause stomach issues if consumed.

As a rule of thumb, do not get lettuce, tomato, or ice when ordering unless given then “okay” to do so. Most of the restaurants and our meals at the hotel are all safe to eat, but if in question, stay clear. We do our best to eat at restaurants where the fruits, veggies, and ice is safe.

What vaccines are recommended?

The only recommended immunization needed is a current Tetanus Shot. We are not there at the buggy time of the year. However, the Malaria vaccine is recommended but it not required. Consult your physician or your local Travel Center at if you have any questions or concerns.
