Speaking Spanish

You do not have to be fluent or know Spanish by any means. However, it is encouraged that you try the basics. Hondurans really appreciate your attempt to fit in with their culture. You can download Duolingo or another free application to help learn the basics.

In addition to some Spanish-speakers in our group, we will have Spanish interpreters available in Honduras.

Email Communication

From Day 1, you will want to make a habit of checking your e-mails frequently (particularly as the trip nears), as this is the primary means of communication used. Please let Terri Bock (TerriB@drellinwood.com) know if your e-mail address needs updated.

You will receive pertinent information regarding itineraries, luggage details, and other important notices via e-mail.

How much money should I bring?

It is recommended you bring $200-300 USD, depending on your desire to spend. Everyone will be required to pay for five (5) meals + tips on their own (estimated at $10-20 each). The required Departure Tax is $40 USD. Your personal spending (hotel room charges and souvenirs) will vary, but it is recommended you bring $100-150 USD to be on the safe side.

Can I use my credit or debit card while in Honduras?

Certainly! Many, if not all, establishments accept all major credit cards. It is strongly recommended you place a travel advisory on your bankcards and credit cards to monitor any potential fraud or suspicious activity (even if you do not plan to use them). You can use some bankcards and/or credit cards, but you may in incur a foreign transaction fee – check with your financial institute for details.

To prevent credit card fraud, most financial institutions, if unaware of your travel arrangements, will put a hold on your cards after the first foreign transaction. So, if you do plan to use your credit card or debit card oversees, be sure you inform your financial institute of your travel plans.
